About 70 yards south, on Furnace Branch of Forty-Eight Creek, a cold-blast charcoal furnace was built in 1835. Using brown hematite ore from orebanks within 200 yards of the site, it was remodeled several times during its life, attaining a maximum capacity of 15 tons daily. It operated until about November, 1865.
