6-112 miles. This hamlet on the Mississippi was an early rival of Memphis for commercial supremacy. In 1830, it was the most important shipping point in West Tennessee; it declined after failure of David Crockett's scheme to cut a canal from the Hatchie to the Tennessee River. The town was burned during the War Between the States.
