On this site was the campus of Gallatin Female Academy, 1824-36, and Sumner Female Academy, 1837-56. It was leased by the Howard Lodge L.O.O.F. to Howard Female Institute, 1856-74, Neophogen College, 1874-78, and Howard Female College, 1878-1922. It was Howard Elementary School, 1923-77, then purchased by First Baptist Church in 1982. Joseph S. Fowler, Howard president, 1857-61, served as U.S. Senator in 1865, the first senator seated from a former Confederate state. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission.
