Conducting bands of recruits for the Federal army out of Confederate territory into Kentucky, Dan Ellis usually crossed South Holston River three miles below Old Pactolus Ferry. Starting at Valley Forge, in Carter County, his route ran north toward White Oak Flats, thence over Clinch Mountain. 'They slept by day and traveled at night. Ellis was never captured.
