A Confederate officer cited for gallantry at Murfreesboro, he served under Theodore Roosevelt as first Governor-General of the Philippines (Act of Congress Feb. 6, 1905). First accredited U.S. Ambassador to Japan, and Secretary of War. Wright died in his house which stood on this site. The carriage house, circa 1840, was restored in 1975.
