Born here in a log house in 1844; graduate of Amherst College, later awarded degrees from the universities of Berlin, Leipzig, Columbia, and Princeton. In 1890, Columbia University appointed him dean of its faculties of political science and of philosophy, pure science & fine arts. An author of many books on international law. He died in 1931.
