19 miles west, near Fulton, on the Mississippi, LaSalle built a fort while searching for Pierre Prudhomme, his expedition's armorer, who got lost while hunting in 1682. On finding him the expedition continued to the Gulf. On his return trip, LaSalle became ill here, and the expedition remained for 40 days while he recovered.
