Upon this site, with five acres donated from the Rev. Thomas Stringfield's farm, this college was founded under direction of Holston Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1848, with Rev. Creed Fulton president. It was incorporated in 1850, During the Civil War, all buildings, except one used as a hospital, were destroyed.
