Near here, possibly on Williams' Island, the French established a river trading post about 1760, hoping to take advantage of the defeat of the British at Fort Loudoun. The rapid, rough water of the Suck and similar hazards, however, created insurmountable navigation difficulties, and the project was shortly abandoned.
