Hamilton County
Established 1819; named in honor of

Alexander Hamilton,


who served with distinction in The Revolutionary War; Member of Constitutional Convention 1787. Secretary of the Treasury under President Washington, 1789-95.

Meigs County
Established 1836; named in honor of

Return Jonathan Meigs.


Major in the Continental Army at the Battle of Lexington; captured at Quebec and exchanged; ended the war as colonel, having distinguished himself at the Battle of Sag Harbor and the capture of Stony Point. In 1801 was appointed Indian agent for the Cherokee, where he remained until his death in 1823.
