Tidence Lane was pastor of the first church in Tennessee, Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church in Washington County, in 1778. He also organized Bent Creek, now Whitesburg Baptist Church in 1785 and was first moderator of the first Baptist Association, Holston, in 1786. He and six of his sons fought in The Revolutionary War.
