Clay County Established 1870; named in honor of Henry Clay. Representative in Congress from Kentucky for many years, sometime Speaker of the House; U.S. Senator and Secretary of State to President John Quincy Adams. Three times a candidate for President. Overton County Established 1806; named in honor of John Overton. Pioneer attorney at Nashville; close friend of Andrew Jackson. Judge of the State Supreme Court, 1804-09. Co-founder, with Jackson and General James Winchester, of the city of Memphis; he is said to have named it. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission.
