Deerfield's first house of worship was erected near this spot in 1770
by the Baptists. They used this building until about 1818, when they
constructed a new church at Deerfield Center. The Baptists' first preacher,
Eliphalet Smith, was ordained in 1770. The Deerfield church was one of the earliest Baptist groups to be formed in New Hampshired.
