After months of rainfall a swollen Mississippi River broke the levee at Mound Landing, some 2 1/2 miles west, on April 21, 1927. The flood waters caused widespread destruction and loss of life in seven states. The breadth of the disaster focused attention on the Delta and helped initiate a national flood countrol program.
