About two miles north, on Shoal Creek, David Crockett built a grist mill, powder mill, and distillery about 1819. In 1821, flood waters from the creek destroyed his installation and bankrupted him. Shortly thereafter, he moved to the vicinity of Rutherford, in west Tennessee, leaving his remaining property to creditors.
