A branch of the Great War & Trading Path came up the valley of this creek, named for a Virginia trader killed by Indians in 1775. Col. William Christian's punitive expedition used it in 1776, crossing the French Broad River. John Sevier broke Cherokee resistance at Cedar Springs in 1780. First settlers came in 1784. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission.
