Putnam County Created 1842; re-established 1854; named in honor of Israel Putnam. Veteran of the French & Indian war; Commander in the Detroit Expedition against Pontiac. A Major General in The Revolution , he fought at Bunker Hill and Harlem Heights and commanded American forces at the Battle of Long Island. Cumberland County Established 1855; named in honor of The Cumberland Mountains which were in turn named for the Duke of Cumberland by Dr. Thomas Walker of Virginia, about 1748. Tennessee frontiersman. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission
