Putnam County
Created 1842; re-established 1854; named in honor of

Israel Putnam.


Veteran of the French & Indian war; Commander in the Detroit Expedition against Pontiac. A Major General in The Revolution , he fought at Bunker Hill and Harlem Heights and commanded American forces at the Battle of Long Island.


Cumberland County
Established 1855; named in honor of

The Cumberland Mountains


which were in turn named for the Duke of Cumberland by Dr. Thomas Walker of Virginia, about 1748. Tennessee frontiersman.
