Near here, in 1854, the Tennessee Mining Company built two? furnaces to serve its own and other mines in the Copper Basin. Incompetent operation made them a failure. In 1855, Alexander H. Tripple built a furnace and calciner for the Eureka Mining Co., about 1 1/2 miles upstream. Their operation brought the Tennessee smelter back into production in 1856.
