In 1819 several families formed the first settlement in what was to be known as Madison County 2.1 miles west on the Cotton Grove Road. Said road was ordered built this same year. In 1821 the first cotton in the county was grown here. A post office and stagecoach stop operated here in 1834. Only the road and Baptist Church retain the Cotton Grove name. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission
