Born in Albemarle County, Virginia, 1774; Army officer; private secretary to President Jefferson 1801-1803; Leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Pacific Northwest 1804-1806; Governor of Louisiana Territory 1806-1809; died mysteriously here at Grinder's Stand on the Natchez Trace, October II, 1809. A monument marks his grave.
