Goodrich, 1 mile west, once a furnace-town producing pig-iron from ore from Nunnelly Mines, was the birthplace of Beth Slater Whitson, writer of poems, stories, and songs. Her best known song lyrics were Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland and Let Me Call You Sweetheart. She moved to Nashville in 1913 and is buried there in Spring Hill Cemetery.
