About 1/2 mile N. of here, a Chickamauga village was destroyed by Evan Shelby's punitive expedition of 1799. Following his expulsion from Georgia, this wealthy Cherokee chief built a homestead here, with three racetracks, about which a new village grew up. It was abandoned at the Cherokee expulsion of 1838. Vann's house stood until 1900.
