Near here stood the house of Adam Thorowgood (1604-1640), who arrived in Virginia as an indentured servant in 1621. After completing his service, Thorowgood became a leading citizen in Lower Norfolk County. In 1635, he received 5350 acres of land for bringing 105 English settlers to Virginia including himself and his wife, Sarah. The couple settled in Lynnhaven Parish, which Thorowgood named after his home in England, King's Lynn, and he founded its first church and glebe. He was also elected to the House of Burgesses, made a member of the governor's council, and served as a militia officer and vestryman. (More commonly spelled Adam Thoroughgood. See also: Adam Thoroughgood House.)
