Mount Rogers is the highest mountain peak in Virginia, and once was called Balsam Mountain likely for its large number of Fraser firs (Abies fraseri) then referred to as Balsam trees. It was named for William Barton Rogers (1804-1882), Virginia's state geologist from 1835 to 1842. During his tenure, he and his assistants inventoried natural resources throughout the state. He later founded the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which admitted its first students in 1865, and served as its first president. Mount Rogers is located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, which was created by the U.S. Congress in 1966.
