This park of 7604 acres was originally known as the Swift Creek Recreational Area. Its purchase in 1934 and subsequent development by the federal government were with the understanding that eventually the State would accept and maintain the property, incorporating it into its Park System. On June 6, 1946 the Virginia Conservation Commission dedicated the park, naming it for the Indian princess Pocahontas.
