Historical Marker
     One of few survivors of steam railroading era, this engine was built in 1857 -- twenty-nine years after steam engine was first developed for transportation. First locomotive of Arizona and Southeastern Co., engine is a rare American type identified by number and size of wheels. Served various lines out of Chicago, Illinois; Arizona; and Texas. Retired in 1909, it was then preserved by the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. for historic value. Saw brief action (1938) in motion picture Let Freedom Ring. In 1960 S.P. donated engine to University of Texas at El Paso. (1968)
