On this site El Paso's first public school classes met in a two-room adobe building. D. W. McKay, who operated the El Paso Select School of Males and Females here in 1881 and 1882, was made principal of the first city public school March 5, 1883. Central School, once located at Campbell and Myrtle. The first publicly financed school building was built in 1884. Members of the first school board, elected in 1882, were O.T. Bassett, president: A. M. Loomis, John Dougher, Abner Tibbets, Dr. O. C. Irvin and Dr. J. A. McKinney. Cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy Mirabeau B. Lamar, 2nd president of Texas, founder of the Texas educational system and hero of the Battle of San Jacinto. Presented by The State National Bank of El Paso 22 April 1963
