The plinth of the James Bowie statue reads:

JAMES BOWIE

1795-1836

James Bowie was at one time a farmer, a logger, a scout, a guide, a land agent, and a colonel in the Texas Rangers. He is better known, however, for the knife that bears his name and his death at The Alamo.

Fighting for Texas Independence at The Alamo, James Bowie was killed on March 6, 1836. On December 4, 1840, Bowie County was named in his honor. The nearby James Bowie School District, Organized May 14, 1935 also bears his name.
