The Deaths of Dr. Richard Fox Brenham and Ewen Cameron

On February 11, 1843, Captain Ewen Cameron led Texan prisoners from the Dawson and Mier expeditions in an escape from Hacienda Salado, 80 miles south of Saltillo, Coahuila. Dr. Richard Fox Brenham died attempting escape, one of five Texans killed.

Within two weeks after escaping, 176 of the Texans had been recaptured; seven died in the surrounding mountains; only five reached Texas safely. Arriving back at Hacienda Salado on March 25, 1843, seventeen of the recaptured Texans were ordered executed by Santa Anna, after drawing black beans from a pot containing 159 white beans and seventeen black beans.

Captain Cameron drew a white bean, but was executed near Mexico City on April 25, 1843, the result of a long-standing personal feud with Mexican commander Antonio Canales, who requested the execution order from Santa Anna.

Neither Brenham nor Cameron is entombed here.
