With two brigades of Cavalry in a widely separated encircling or Pincer maneuver on the night of March 24, 1863, Brig. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest raided deep behind Federal lines. He completely captured the Federal garrison of 785 officers and men with all valuable stores with loss of but one killed and two wounded.
