Wayne County


Established 1819; named in honor

Maj. Gen. Anthony Wayne


of The Revolution ary Army, from Pennsylvania. His daring, usually successful, earned for him the nickname, Mad Anthony.

Lawrence County
Established 1817; named in honor of

Maj. Gen. John Sullivan.


Served under Stephen Decatur; in War of 1812 he commanded the Chesapeake in her fight with the frigate, Shannon. Mortally wounded, he gave the famous command:
Don't give up the Ship.
