At Clifton, 8 miles N., Forrest crossed the river with 1800 cavalry men and 4 guns, on a 200-mile raid into Tennessee. Recrossing there, Jan. I, 1863, he had tom up 3 trunk railroads, taken more Federal prisoners than he had soldiers, taken or destroyed 10 guns and military stores worth millions; he had immobilized more than ten times his strength in Federal troops and delayed Grant's Vicksburg campaign 6 months.
