After hiding by day with his groups of recruits for the Union Army from Confederate-held Tennessee in the dense under-growth of White Oak Flats, Captain Dan Ellis passed them into Virginia near here, then crossed North Holston River before ascending Clinch Mountain enroute to Kentucky.
