Gen. Hylan B. Lyon's Confederate Cavalry Brigade ferried here on the raid through West Kentucky, Middle Tennessee and North Alabama, using the Federal steamer Ben South, captured by gunfire of Gracey's Battery under Lt. R.B. Matthews. They later captured the steamer Thomas E. Tutt and towboat Echo with four barges, a Federal Lt. Col. and 49 other prisoners. The vessels were burned and sunk in the channel off this point.
