On May 1849 a pair of grey squirrels were donated to Memphis by a resident of Bolivar, TN, who said he hoped the squirrels would add to animation of Court Square, which was laid out as a park when Memphis was planned in the 1820's.... The present population is thought to be descendants of the donated pair. During the 1930's hundreds of squirrels were trapped at Court Square and released in Overton Park.
