This was the Northeast Corner of Market and North Street in the city of Raleigh. From 1827-1867 Raleigh was the county seat and the courthouse stood 200' to the Southwest of here. The original Methodist Church still stands on the East Street North of Stage Road. First known as Sanderlin's Bluff Raleigh was named by Joseph Graham who was from Raleigh, North Carolina. Raleigh was a prosperous rival of Memphis but the city suffered from a long decline. Raleigh surrendered the city charter in 1912, the same year the famous Raleigh Inn was destroyed by fire.
