In a house which stood here, the only President of the Confederacy lived from 1875 to 1878, while president of a life insurance company. Born in Kentucky, 1808, educated at Transylvania and the Military Academy, he had also been soldier, member of Congress, Senator from Mississippi and U.S. Secretary of War. He died in New Orleans, 1889.
