At nearby Fort Pickering this native of Maryland was U.S. Factor for the Chickasaw Indians from May 1814 to August 1818, after serving on the extreme western frontier in Missouri 1809 to 1814. He was mayor of Memphis for five terms, 1829-30 and 1833-35, and a leading merchant and citizen.
