5 miles west is Rugby, founded Oct. 5, 1880, by Thomas Hughes, author of Tom Brown S School Days, in an idealistic endeavor to provide homes and livelihood in the United States for the younger sons of English gentry. Within three years the settlement had proved financially impracticable, but its English origins are still visible.
