Early in 1862 the Union Army advanced into Middle Tennessee and by autumn the Confederate forces were driven back into this part of the state. General Braxton Bragg moved his army here in December, 1862 to resist the Federal forces under the command of William S. Rosecrans. At dawn on December 31, Bragg assaulted the Union right wing and drove it northeast. After three days fighting no side could claim victory. Of the 83,000 men engaged on both sides, nearly one-third were casualties.
