The stately Georgian mansion four miles south was built in 1819 by Joseph Washington of Surry County, Virginia, a distant cousin of the nation's first president, and bears the Anglo-Saxon form of the family name. The estate, with its formal garden and family burial ground, was later inherited by Congressman Joseph E. Washington (served 1887-1897). Wessyngton was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on May 06, 1971.
