On October 31, 1862, Morgan's Cavalry, returning to Tennessee from Kentucky, swept Federal forces before them. A spirited battle was fought at the trestle locally known as Dead Horse Trestle. Traces of the trestle embankment are still evident and large numbers of Minie balls from the engagement have been found there. The trestle, along with three others between Ridgetop and Goodlettsville, was destroyed in order to prevent the use of the railroad by the Federal army.
