Putnam County Created 1842; re-established 1854; named in honor of Israel Putnam. Veteran of the French & Indian war; Commander in the Detroit Expedition against Pontiac. A Major General in The Revolution , he fought at Bunker Hill and Harlem Heights and commanded American forces at the Battle of Long Island. Jackson County Established 1801; named in honor of Andrew Jackson. Member of the first state Constitutional Convention, later representative in Congress and Senator; major general in the Army, victor in the Creek War, two conquests of Florida and the Battle of New Orleans in 1815; seventh President of the United States.
