Meigs County Established 1836; named in honor of Return Jonathan Meigs. Major in the Continental Army at the Battle of Lexington; captured at Quebec and exchanged; ended the war as colonel, having distinguished himself at the Battle of Sag Harbor and the capture of Stony Point. In 1801 was appointed Indian agent for the Cherokee, where he remained until his death in 1823. Rhea County Established 1807; named in honor of John Rhea. Revolution ary veteran who fought at King's Mountain. Delegate to the North Carolina Convention which ratified the U.S. Constitution; member of the Tennessee Constitutional Convention, 1796, State House of Representatives, 1796-97 & of the U.S. House of Representatives, 1803-15 & 1817-23.
