Early settlers in the Hiwassee District worshipped 300 yards east of here. Later, David Campbell gave the site to the Hiwassee Cumberland Presbyterian Campground and Church, October 1, 1844. Troops were stationed here during the Civil War. George Anderson, James County pioneer, is buried in the Campground Cemetery 75 feet to the west.
