Land for this cemetery was part of the North Carolina grant to Nicholas Long; John White deeded it to the City of Columbia in 1808. Here are buried, among other pioneers of the Territory South of the River Ohio and early settlers, Major Samuel Polk and his wife, Jane Knox, parents of President James K. Polk.
