In this area Forrest's Confederate Cavalry Corps engaged the newly formed Federal Cavalry of Maj. Gen. James H. Wilson. By aggressive action and skillful maneuvering, Wilson was cut off from contact with Schofield and deflected from his mission of screening Schofield's withdrawal toward Nashville.
