Marion County Established 1817; named in honor of Brig. Gen. Francis Marion. Established 1817; named in honor of Brig. Gen. Francis Marion. Revolutionary leader in South Carolina, whose brilliantly successful guerilla tactics earned for him the title: ?The Swamp Fox. Hamilton County Established 1819; named in honor of Alexander Hamilton, who served with distinction in The Revolutionary War; Member of Constitutional Convention 1787.
