A stagecoach tavern was kept here by Gen. Richard H. Allen, veteran of the War of 1812. His son, Capt. William Allen, raised a company of Lawrence Countians for the Mexican War. He was killed, leading his troops with his father's sword, at Monterey. He is buried in the garden behind the house.
