Born here January 5, 1906, this educator, scholar, and historian was an authority on Southern history. His work is best known for the portrayal of the plain folk and common soldier in the Confederacy. His books include The Life of Johnny Reb, The Life of Billy Yank, The Common Soldier of the Confederacy, and The Road to Appomattox. He died April 4, 1980. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission.
